Enhancing WASH Activity

With funding from the American people through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Global Communities is implementing Enhancing Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (En-WASH) Activity in Ghana from October 2021 to September 2026.

En-WASH aims to facilitate access to and use of sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene services, as well financing and governance of northern Ghana. Employing a systems-strengthening approach, successful implementation of the Enhancing WASH activity will result in:

  • The Government of Ghana, through the Metropolitan/Municipal/District Assemblies (MMDAs), efficiently and effectively planning, budgeting, implementing, and monitoring water and sanitation services;
  • The Government of Ghana, through MMDAs and other actors, improving the enabling environment for private sector participation in the WASH sector;
  • Citizens adopting and sustaining improved WASH practices; and
  • WASH service providers adopting improved management, operational and finance model products in target districts.

Impact

En-WASH will build on the improved behaviors attained under the USAID-WASH for Health Project that ended in September 2021.

Through En-WASH, it is anticipated that 300,000 people will gain access to a basic sanitation service and 250,000 people will gain access to basic drinking water services. In addition, En-WASH will support MMDAs to enable 70 percent of target communities to be certified as Open Defecation Free (ODF) and 60 percent of households to adopt and sustain improved WASH practices, including the transformation of gender roles and norms.

Geographic Scope

En-WASH will work in 30 districts across six regions in Ghana (Oti, Northern, North East, Savannah, Upper East and Upper West). The activity’s geographic scope will include USAID/Feed the Future Zone of Influence (ZOI). It comprises 17 districts in four regions. The activities will intervene district-wide with specific interventions to reach the poor.

As an activity that was designed using a behavior-led lens, En-WASH will focus on demand driven and behavior-led activities which build better processes and strengthen the capacities of institutions to provide, manage and sustain WASH services.

Implementation Team

Forging a team comprising of 11 specialized organizations/consortium, En-WASH will impact the WASH sector, tackling multiple challenges and building partnerships to accelerate progress towards attainments of Sustainable Development Goal 6.

The consortium is led by Global Communities with over 12 years’ experience in Ghana’s WASH sector in both rural and urban settings.
